I have less than 24 hours before I leave the decade of my 20’s. And Michael Jackson died. Just keep heaping it on why don’t you.
In all seriousness, I really haven’t thought too much about it – I feel like I am living the “30 year old” lifestyle and really enjoying it. It will just be strange to not be the baby among some of my friends who entered the 30’s a while ago – I don’t have that to hang on to as fodder for humor. To be sure, I’ll find other things.
I like to milk my b-day for all it’s worth, so I have been calling this Birthday Weekend (and Rob has sweetly followed suit: great lunch on the deck today, humoring me with garage sales, snuggling with books with my son). It’s all about being young at heart – humble, teachable and open to what God has for you day by day.
Speaking of – anyone seen the documentary “Young at Heart”? Fabulous. Enjoy your weekend……

We used to roll up the living room rug when my aunts and uncle (Doug, Carrie, Annette) would babysit my sister and I and do all kinds of signature Michael Jackson moves. He was off the charts with his iconic stature, his break into MTV with music videos/short films and his dancing. That man could dance. It’s strange to say “could.” I do, all drama aside, feel like a bit of my childhood has died.
He was a strange bird (quoting a dear friend) – but the dude could sing.

We’ve got a friend. Travis. He fancies himself a clean-cut, low maintainance hippie. Which is mostly true. Pretty low maintainence…except for one major time consuming thing: dreads. Did you know those things are the highest upkeep hair-do one could have? I’ve never spent 5 hours on my hair on a Saturday in my own bathroom. But Travis has. (secret: I’ve always wanted to dread my hair. any voters?)
He’s an avid hitchhiker, wanderer, fishermen, traveler. Needing no one but needing everyone all at the same time. Here’s his latest sign for the road. I almost fell off my stool laughin’ as we thought this up:

He left BG this afternoon and texted us the reactions as an experiment on his hopeful, dogged way to Cinci. He’s in Dayton now (average speed, going well) and tells us :”The crowd is loving the sign. The cracking up of passerbyers is priceless.” Then a little later: “Whoop. Maybe the sign just scared somebody!” To which Rob replied: “Yeah, maybe the sign gets increasingly sinister as it darkens.” Good point.
If you need tips, strategies and stories on hitchhiking internationally, I’ve got ‘em, good people. Just ask. Here at Lady Haven (we’re trying out a name or two for our house, strongly recommended by a friend) we get all kinds of interesting folk – all which have a special place in our hearts. Including the low, yet high, maintainance dread wearers. The charming jesters on the side o the road.

We asked Robby what he wanted for his birthday cake (we stole the make-a-thing out of a cake from our friends down the lane) and he kept saying: mower? mower?
Lawnmower cake it is.
Here’s the creation. Rob did the construction and then we iced together, strategizing each step down to the pretzels. Unfortunately Robby was sick for his actual birthday (and hives last year, what is this?) but we got a few good shots….

I forgot how restorative the vastness of the ocean is for my soul. Honestly. We had a long last month in ministry and I felt like I was losing battery power daily. But realizing how small we are as I stand at the edge of the earth is surprisingly refreshing, empowering and sweet. My God is magnificent. Not to mention slow days of laughter, books, surfboards and good, good food. I love my family.

We arrived yesterday in the Outer Banks after 15 hours of travel with two minivans and 8 adults and two kids. We met another minivan hauling the rest of Rob’s family – 4 more kiddos and 4 more parents. 18 in all. The beach house is great and we are chillaxin’.

Here’s more footage from our night at The JASCARS. You’ll not miss it next year, right?

That night Robby had a co-ed (gasp!) sleepover with Sophia Gawron. Trinity was amazing with her day off the next day. She let me come and get him at my leisure and they had baths, pancakes and a good time in a box. Yes, a box.
